چکیده

Temperature-dependent ~300–10 K! reflectance measurements were made on h-Mo4O11 and g-Mo4O11 in the conducting b-c plane in the frequency range 30–8000 cm, for light polarized both parallel and perpendicular to the charge density wave ~CDW! direction ~b axis!. The optical conductivity was determined from a Kramers-Kronig analysis of the reflectance. The data clearly show strong suppression of the conductivity in the c-axis direction below the CDW transition temperatures, leading to a partial optical gap in the spectrum. The b-axis conductivity does not show as strong a suppression except at low frequencies. The CDW gap energies for both crystals are evaluated, in agreement with those obtained from transport data. The data are considered in light of recent work on stripes and charge ordering in the field of superconductivity. @S0163-1829~98!05644-6#

Hidden One Dimensionality and Non-Fermi Liquid ARPES Lineshapes of the Electronic Structure of η-Mo4O11

η-Mo4O11 is a layered metal that undergoes two charge density wave (CDW) transitions at 109 K and 30 K, and is unique in showing a bulk quantum Hall effect [1]. Research so far indicates that this material has a “hidden one-dimensional” (hidden-1d) Fermi surface (FS) in the normal state (T > 109 K), whose nesting property drives the 109 K CDW formation [2]. Here, we directly confirm this pictur...

Electron Tunneling Studies in the Charge Density Wave State of the Quasi Bidimensional Metal -Mo4O11

Electron tunneling studies bave been perforrned on junctions made with the quasi bidimensional oxide ~-Mo4Oii and a lead film separated by an insulating oxide loyer. The density of states in the vicinity of the Fermi level has been obtained along two directions (parallel and perpendicular to the loyers) in the ternperature range 1 K-90 K. The data frorn trie differential conductance as a functi...

Scanning Probe Microscopy of Cleaved Molybdates: a-MoO3(010), Mo18O52(100), Mo8O23(010), and h-Mo4O11(100)

volves determining the population and distribution of these defects. Scanning probe microscopy was used to examine the cleaved surfaces of four binary molybdates: a-MoO3(010), Mo18O52(100), Scanning probe microscopy (SPM), a term we use here to Mo8O23(010), and h-Mo4O11(100). The Mo18O52(100) and refer collectively to scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) Mo8O23(010) surfaces were imaged in air a...

Phonon screening in high-temperature superconductors

In good conductors optical phonons are usually screened, and therefore not observed. However, sharp features due to infrared-active modes in the copper-oxygen planes are observed in the optical conductivity of Pr1.85Ce0.15CuO4 and YBa2Cu3O6.95. Oscillator strengths indicate that the screening of these modes is poor or totally absent. These materials are compared with eta-Mo4O11, in which lattic...

Dynamics of the electroreflective response of TaS3

We have observed a large s,1%d change in infrared reflectance of the charge-density-wave (CDW) conductor, orthorhombic TaS3, when its CDW is depinned. The change is concentrated near one current contact. Assuming that the change in reflectance is proportional to the degree of CDW polarization, we have studied the dynamics of CDW repolarization through position-dependent measurements of the vari...
